Text: Calculus, Single and Multivariable, 2nd Edition, by Hughes-Hallett, Gleason, McCallum, et al.

Calculator: A graphics calculator with a computer algebra system is required for this course.
The Math. Dept. recommends the Texas Instrument models; TI-89 or TI -92 Plus.

  1. Exam 1 covering chapter sections 1.1 - 1.11, Sept. 13
  2. Exam 2 covering chapter sections 2.1 - 2.5 & 4.1 - 4.5, Oct. 11
  3. Exam 3 covering chapter sections 4.6 - 4.8 & 5.1 - 5.3, 5.5, 5.6, Nov. 3
  4. Exam 4 covering chapter sections 3.1 - 3.4 & 6.1, 6.2, Nov. 30
  5. Final Exam date: Tuesday, Dec. 14 from 2:30-4:30 pm

Final Exam: A Common Final will be given for all Math 150A sections. It will be comprehensive and cover Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7.1 and it is scheduled for Tuesday Dec. 14 from 2:30 to 4:20. The location will be announced by the Math. Dept.
Prerequisites: Passing score on the ELM or exemption; four years of high school mathematics, including trigonometry, and a passing score on the Mathematics Qualifying Exam (MQE).
Late Work: No make-up exams are given. However, special considerations will be given if you have a verifiable emergency.
Reading: You are to read ahead in the textbook each day and be familiar with the new vocabulary and new material before the lecture is given.
Homework: For each topic, try to do as many problems as you can, to improve your knowledge and understanding. Do at least the ones assigned on the syllabus. Study calculus outside of class a minimum of 8 hours each week. Assignments for:

  1. Chapters sections 1.1 - 1.11
  2. Chapters sections 2.1 - 2.5 & 4.1 - 4.5
  3. Chapters sections 4.6 - 4.8 & 5.1 - 5.3, 5.5, 5.6
  4. Chapters sections 3.1 - 3.4 & 6.1, 6.2
  5. Chapters sections 6.4 & 7.1

Collaboration: Find at least one classmate with whom you can study. A support group is important.
Attendance: Your presence matters. Arrive to class on time! Let me know if you cannot attend a class. I will inform you of the topic covered and explain to you how to study them on your own.
Tutors: The Mathematics Department runs a free tutoring center in MH-187.
