Exercise 5.  Find the image of the right half-plane  [Graphics:Images/ComplexFunPowerRootModHome_gr_436.gif]  under the mapping  [Graphics:Images/ComplexFunPowerRootModHome_gr_437.gif].

Solution 5.

See text and/or instructor's solution manual.

Answer.  The region in the w-plane that lies to the right of the parabola  [Graphics:../Images/ComplexFunPowerRootModHome_gr_439.gif].

Solution.  The mapping  [Graphics:../Images/ComplexFunPowerRootModHome_gr_440.gif]  is the composition of  the functions  [Graphics:../Images/ComplexFunPowerRootModHome_gr_441.gif]  and  [Graphics:../Images/ComplexFunPowerRootModHome_gr_442.gif],  i. e.

        [Graphics:../Images/ComplexFunPowerRootModHome_gr_443.gif].

The function  [Graphics:../Images/ComplexFunPowerRootModHome_gr_444.gif]  maps the right half-plane  [Graphics:../Images/ComplexFunPowerRootModHome_gr_445.gif]  onto the right half-plane  [Graphics:../Images/ComplexFunPowerRootModHome_gr_446.gif].

Now follow the steps in 1 (b).

For the mapping  [Graphics:../Images/ComplexFunPowerRootModHome_gr_447.gif][Graphics:../Images/ComplexFunPowerRootModHome_gr_448.gif]  the point  [Graphics:../Images/ComplexFunPowerRootModHome_gr_449.gif]  in the XY-plane

is mapped to the point  [Graphics:../Images/ComplexFunPowerRootModHome_gr_450.gif]  in the uv-plane,  and we get the equations  [Graphics:../Images/ComplexFunPowerRootModHome_gr_451.gif]  and  [Graphics:../Images/ComplexFunPowerRootModHome_gr_452.gif].

Then, using  [Graphics:../Images/ComplexFunPowerRootModHome_gr_453.gif],  the first quadrant  [Graphics:../Images/ComplexFunPowerRootModHome_gr_454.gif]  is mapped onto the upper half-plane,

so the image of  [Graphics:../Images/ComplexFunPowerRootModHome_gr_455.gif]  is contained in the upper half plane  [Graphics:../Images/ComplexFunPowerRootModHome_gr_456.gif].

From Exercise 1 (b), the image of the line  [Graphics:../Images/ComplexFunPowerRootModHome_gr_457.gif]  under the mapping  [Graphics:../Images/ComplexFunPowerRootModHome_gr_458.gif]  is the parabola  [Graphics:../Images/ComplexFunPowerRootModHome_gr_459.gif].

Hence, the image of the right half plane   [Graphics:../Images/ComplexFunPowerRootModHome_gr_460.gif]  under the mapping  [Graphics:../Images/ComplexFunPowerRootModHome_gr_461.gif]

is region in the w-plane that lies to the right of the parabola  [Graphics:../Images/ComplexFunPowerRootModHome_gr_462.gif].

Therefore, the the image of the right half-plane  [Graphics:../Images/ComplexFunPowerRootModHome_gr_463.gif]  under the mapping  [Graphics:../Images/ComplexFunPowerRootModHome_gr_464.gif]

is the region in the w-plane that lies to the right of the parabola  [Graphics:../Images/ComplexFunPowerRootModHome_gr_465.gif].

We are done.

Aside.  We can let Mathematica double check our work.

                    [Graphics:../Images/ComplexFunPowerRootModHome_gr_466.gif]         [Graphics:../Images/ComplexFunPowerRootModHome_gr_467.gif]

The image of  [Graphics:../Images/ComplexFunPowerRootModHome_gr_468.gif]  under the mapping  [Graphics:../Images/ComplexFunPowerRootModHome_gr_469.gif]  lies to the right of the parabola  [Graphics:../Images/ComplexFunPowerRootModHome_gr_470.gif].
