Exercise 12.  If  [Graphics:Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_817.gif]  is a mapping, where  [Graphics:Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_818.gif]  is not analytic, then what behavior would one expect regarding the angles between curves?

Solution 12.

See text and/or instructor's solution manual.

Solution.   In general we would not expect that angles are preserved.

Illustrated Solution 12 Part I.   If  [Graphics:../Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_819.gif]   be analytic at  [Graphics:../Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_820.gif]   then  [Graphics:../Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_821.gif]  is not analytic at [Graphics:../Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_822.gif] and is not a conformal mapping at [Graphics:../Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_823.gif].

However, as shown in Exercise 11  [Graphics:../Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_824.gif]  preserves the magnitude, but reverses the sense, of angles at  [Graphics:../Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_825.gif].

For illustration purposes we can revisit Exercises 6 and 7 where we looked at   [Graphics:../Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_826.gif]  and  [Graphics:../Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_827.gif].

The mappings  [Graphics:../Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_828.gif]  and  [Graphics:../Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_829.gif]  will preserves the magnitude, but reverses the sense, of angles.

Aside.  We can let Mathematica illustrate our work.

Revisit Exercise 6.  Consider the mappings  [Graphics:../Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_830.gif]  and  [Graphics:../Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_831.gif].

                                   [Graphics:../Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_832.gif]          [Graphics:../Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_833.gif]

                                   At  [Graphics:../Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_834.gif]  [Graphics:../Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_835.gif]   preserves angles.

                                   [Graphics:../Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_836.gif]          [Graphics:../Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_837.gif]

At  [Graphics:../Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_838.gif]  [Graphics:../Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_839.gif]   preserves the magnitude, but reverses the sense of angles.

Revisit Exercise 7.  Consider the mappings  [Graphics:../Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_840.gif]  and  [Graphics:../Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_841.gif].

                                   [Graphics:../Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_842.gif]          [Graphics:../Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_843.gif]

                                   At  [Graphics:../Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_844.gif]  [Graphics:../Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_845.gif]   preserves angles.

                                   [Graphics:../Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_846.gif]          [Graphics:../Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_847.gif]

At  [Graphics:../Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_848.gif]  [Graphics:../Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_849.gif]   preserves the magnitude, but reverses the sense of angles.

Illustrated Solution 12 Part II.   In the exercises in Section 3.2 we studied several mappings  [Graphics:../Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_850.gif]  where  [Graphics:../Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_851.gif]  is not analytic and not conformal.

For illustration purposes we can revisit Exercise 1 (g), Exercise 11 (a) and Exercise 11 (c) in Section 3.2.

Aside.  We can let Mathematica illustrate our work.

Revisit Exercise 1 (g).   [Graphics:../Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_852.gif].

                    [Graphics:../Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_853.gif]          [Graphics:../Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_854.gif]

The image of this orthogonal grid under  [Graphics:../Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_855.gif]  is not an orthogonal grid.

Revisit Exercise 11 (a).  [Graphics:../Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_856.gif].

                    [Graphics:../Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_857.gif]          [Graphics:../Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_858.gif]

The image of this orthogonal grid under  [Graphics:../Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_859.gif]  is not an orthogonal grid.

Revisit Exercise 11 (b).  [Graphics:../Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_860.gif].

                    [Graphics:../Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_861.gif]          [Graphics:../Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_862.gif]

The image of this orthogonal grid under  [Graphics:../Images/ConformalMappingModHome_gr_863.gif]  is not an orthogonal grid.
