Solution.

The transformation for the modified Joukowski airfoil can be written as the composition of three functions

[Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_452.gif],   [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_453.gif]   and   [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_454.gif]   and their composition is

                      [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_455.gif].

Let  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_456.gif]  be a circle that passes through the points  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_457.gif]  and has center   [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_458.gif]   in the z-plane.

As shown in Exercise 3, the image of the circle  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_459.gif]  under   [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_460.gif]   is a line  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_461.gif]  that passes through the origin,

and the line [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_462.gif] is inclined at the angle   [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_463.gif]   in the Z-plane  (as shown in Figure 11.69).

Furthermore, the image of the circle  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_464.gif]  is the circle  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_465.gif]  under  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_466.gif].

In Exercise 4 we investigated the situation where the function   [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_467.gif]   is used.

Now follow the steps using the mapping   [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_468.gif].   For the given angle  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_469.gif],

the line  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_470.gif]  inclined at the angle  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_471.gif]  consists of two rays in the  Z-plane

                    [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_472.gif],    and

                    [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_473.gif].

Using the polar coordinates  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_474.gif]  and  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_475.gif]

for the mapping   [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_476.gif]   we have   [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_477.gif]   and

                    [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_478.gif].

Thus the images of  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_479.gif]  and  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_480.gif]  are the two rays  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_481.gif]  and  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_482.gif]  respectively, where

                    [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_483.gif],    and

                    [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_484.gif].

Observe carefully that in this case   [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_485.gif].  In this case, the angle between  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_486.gif]  is

                    [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_487.gif].

Furthermore, the image of the circle  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_488.gif]  is the "cardioid like" curve  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_489.gif]  under  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_490.gif].

The transformation  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_491.gif]  maps the point   [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_492.gif]   onto the point   [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_493.gif].

For the function  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_494.gif]   we have   [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_495.gif].   Since   [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_496.gif],

by Theorem 10.1 in Section 10.1 , the mapping is conformal at  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_497.gif]  and "angles are preserved."

Hence, the angle of rotation at   [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_498.gif]  is   [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_499.gif].

The rays   [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_500.gif]  and  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_501.gif]  tangent to the "cardioid like" curve at  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_502.gif]  make angles  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_503.gif]  and  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_504.gif],  respectively.

Then the images of  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_505.gif]  and  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_506.gif]  are the two arcs  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_507.gif]  and  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_508.gif]  respectively,  that pass through the points  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_509.gif]  and  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_510.gif].

Their image arcs  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_511.gif]  and  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_512.gif]  will also make angles  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_513.gif]  and  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_514.gif],  respectively, at  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_515.gif].

Furthermore, the image of the "cardioid like" curve  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_516.gif]  is the modified Joukowski airfoil  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_517.gif]  under  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_518.gif].

Therefore, the angle at the trailing edge of this modified Joukowski airfoil is   [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_519.gif]  radians.

We are really done.

Aside.  We can explore some graphs.

                    [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_529.gif]

The circles  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_530.gif]  and  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_531.gif]  in the z-plane.

                    [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_532.gif]

The line  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_533.gif]  and the circle  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_534.gif]  in the Z-plane.

                    [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_535.gif]

The rays  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_536.gif]  and  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_537.gif]  and the "cardioid like" curve  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_538.gif]  in the W-plane.

                    [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_539.gif]

The arcs  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_540.gif]  and  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_541.gif]  and modified Joukowski airfoil  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_542.gif]  in the w-plane.

Aside.  In the above construction we used the function   [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_543.gif] which makes the modified Joukowski airfoil  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_544.gif]  form an angle of  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_545.gif]  radians.

We can compare this by using the function    [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_546.gif]  which makes the standard Joukowski airfoil  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_547.gif]  which form an angle of  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_548.gif]  radians.

                    [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_549.gif]

The circles  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_550.gif]  and  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_551.gif]  in the z-plane.

                    [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_552.gif]

The line  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_553.gif]  and the circle  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_554.gif]  in the Z-plane.

                    [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_555.gif]

The ray  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_556.gif]  and the cardioid  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_557.gif]  in the W-plane.

                    [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_558.gif]

The arc  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_559.gif]  and Joukowski airfoil  [Graphics:../Images/JoukowskiTransModHome_gr_560.gif]  in the w-plane.
