The biggest hit on my survey for the entire year 2004 is Tim McGraw's "Live Like You Were Dying". It is the longest running #1 song in the 5 year history of the chart. Tim McGraw is hotter than ever these days, more than 10 years after his debut appearance in the country music world. "Live Like You Were Dying" became the biggest hit of his career, and for good reason. The song urges us all to do exactly what the title says: What are those important things that would be on your list if you knew you had a very limited time to live? Tim lists some awfully good ones. Here are the lyrics of this amazing, inspirational song:
He said I was in my early 40s, with a
lot of life before me.
When a moment came that stopped me on a dime.
I spent most of the next days, lookin' at the X-rays.
And talkin' 'bout the options, and talkin' 'bout sweet time.
I asked him when it sank in that this might really be the real end:
How's it hit ya, when you get that kind of news? And
he said:
I went sky-diving, I went rocky
mountain climbing, I went 2.7 seconds, on a bull named
Foo Man Shu.
And I loved deeper, and I spoke sweeter, and I gave forgiveness I'd been
denying.
And he said someday I hope you get the chance to live like you were dying.
He said I was finally the husband, that most the time I wasn't.
And I became a friend a friend would like to have.
And all a sudden going fishin' wasn't such as
imposition.
And I went 3 times that year I lost my dad.
Well I, I finally read the good book and took a good long hard look
at what I'd do if I could do it all again. And then....
Like tomorrow was a gift and you've got eternity to think about what you do with it. What did you do with it? What would I do with it? What did I do with it?
Sky-diving, I went rocky mountain climbing, I went 2.7 seconds, on a bull named Foo Man Shu.
And I loved deeper, and I spoke sweeter, and I watched an eagle as it was
flying.
And he said someday I hope you get the chance to live like you were dying.
